Holy Donkey!

This coming Palm Sunday we will see how Jesus the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords, the Alpha and the Omega, the Mighty Healer and Deliverer, the God who became man enters into Jerusalem on a donkey!

Why a donkey? Why not a classy horse?

1. It was a fulfillment of Zechariah 9:9 which states, " Rejoice heart and soul, daughter of Zion! Shout for joy, daughter of Jerusalem! Look, your king is approaching, he is vindicated and victorious, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. "

2. It is a sign of peace. In the olden days, leaders used to ride on horses to signify war and on donkeys to signify peace. Jesus entered into Jerusalem so that He can take on that road to Calvary and be the sacrificial Lamb for us so as to ultimately assure us and grant us peace in the knowledge that He paid the price for our sins!

3. From the very moment of His birth on earth, His life pointed to the Holy Cross and from start to end, and in every moment in between, Jesus showed us true humility! In riding a donkey into Jerusalem, He was teaching us to be humble! As St. Augustine puts it, " If you should ask me what are the ways of God, I would tell you that the first is humility, the second is humility, and the third is humility. Not that there are no other precepts to give, but if humility does not preceed all that we do, our efforts are fruitless. "

As we enter into Holy Week, may we imitate Jesus in being humble. Let's swallow our pride and accept the fact that all of us have fallen short of His glory. May we be ready to experience a Holy Week like never before, may we dive into the Ways of His Cross like never before and may we be convicted of His love for us like never before. We can never have enough of Jesus and we can never have Jesus if we are full of ourselves. May Mary our Mother, help us in overcoming our pride and false humility which is, extreme pride!

Jesus became man, Jesus paid the price, Jesus shed His blood, Jesus drank from the Cup of Suffering, Jesus willingly sacrificed for each one of us and He basically did everything for us. All that's left to do is to tap into His work of salvation. It's a lifelong process, it's a journey and it's time to take it up, afresh and anew. The time for mercy is now! Let's get on our donkeys and join Jesus this Holy Week!
